A star rating system for Dunedin student flats has been launched, aimed at better informing student tenants, and rewarding good landlords.
It is the only scheme of its kind in New Zealand, and is the result of collaboration involving Dunedin City Council, Otago University and Otago Polytechnic.
The Student Tenancy Accommodation Rating Scheme, or STARS, is voluntary and was developed in consultation with the city's landlords.
Landlords can fill out a comprehensive online questionnaire about their property, which is then given a rating from one to five stars.
Student tenants can challenge the information provided by landlords, and random audits of properties will be carried out to ensure accuracy.
