There are lengthy delays on a major road on the Coromandel Peninsula after a fatal crash.

Emergency services responded to a crash on State Highway 25 between Thames and Coromandel town, reported just before 9am on Friday.

One person was dead after the two-car crash, police said.

St John said it treated four patients with minor injuries at the scene.

Earlier police said there was a 90-minute delay for travel on alternate route State Highway 25A in the Coromandel after a fatal accident earlier today.

The narrow coastal road winds up the west side of the Coromandel Peninsula and is heavily used during the peak summer holiday period.
