Man fighting for his life after being shot in the Far North

A major police investigation is underway in the Far North town of Mangōnui after a man was left with life-threatening gunshot wounds overnight.

Detective Sergeant Dan Brockbank, of Kaitāia police, said officers were called to Mary Hassett Street around 3.40am after reports a man had been shot.

The victim was in a critical condition when flown to Whangārei Hospital by the Northland Rescue Helicopter.

His condition had since stabilised and he was due to undergo surgery Wednesday.

Brockbank said police were trying to locate the offender and work out exactly what happened.

He said a detailed scene examination would be carried out today, and police would be highly visible in Mangōnui while the investigation continues.

No further deatils of the victim or possible motive were immediately available.

A spokesperson for Hato Hone St John said one ambulance and one helicopter responded to an assault in Mangōnui around 3.30am Wednesday.

Volunteers from the Mangōnui Fire Brigade were also called out to assist.
