Police say high speed was likely a factor in a fatal crash that killed two people in Canterbury over the weekend.

On Saturday a vehicle hit a power pole, bringing down power lines across Butchers Road in Clarkville.

A 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old female were killed, while a third was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Canterbury Rural Area Commander Inspector Peter Cooper said the initial indications suggested high speed was a factor but investigations into the crash were ongoing.

More than 100 households were without power for several hours following the crash.
