The family of Vincent "Vinnie" Cornell, who died rescuing his brother on a jetski, has said he was an "amazing and loving husband and father".

On Sunday police received a report that two jetskiers had got into trouble in Lake Taupō off Acacia Bay.

They said whilst a person made it to shore another did not and was last seen struggling in the water.

Monday afternoon the police dive squad found the man's body.

A rāhui will be in place in the Nukuhau / Acacia Bay area of the lake for the next few days.

On a Give a Little page created by Cornell's sister Sani Leota, she said he died whilst saving his brother's life.

"A selfless and heroic act that speaks volumes about the man he was."

Leota said he was an amazing and loving husband and father.

"He was the pillar of strength and joy in their lives. His love for Ashleigh and his children was boundless; they were his world and his purpose.

"Every moment he spent with his family was filled with care, laughter, and unconditional love."

She said he was "ready to move mountains for those he loved or anyone in his circle".

"His generosity, courage, and devotion to his family and friends will forever leave a legacy of love and kindness."

The page said he was survived by his wife and their children.

The death has been referred to the coroner.
