There is no sign of any stranded whales on beaches at Golden Bay on Thursday after several days of strandings.

A stranded pod of 10 pilot whales was re-floated yesterday evening.

The whales had since swam away, Department Of Conservation (DOC) operations manager Andrew Lamason said and he hoped this would have a good outcome.

The crew was now working on securing the whales that died so they did not drift away.

The group first stranded on Monday near Taupata Point.

They were refloated on Tuesday, then stranded again on Wednesday morning.

Project Jonah said volunteers guided the whales over sandbars and out to deeper water.

Lamason said it had been a huge effort from DOC staff, Project Jonah, and community volunteers over the past week.
