A person has been left with life-threatening injuries in a crash when the vehicle they were in hit a wire barrier and they were thrown out.
Emergency services were called to the three-vehicle crash at Tuamarina, between Picton and Blenheim, about 6.30am on Wednesday.
One of the vehicles hit a wire barrier and an occupants was ejected, police said.
The person suffered critical injuries and was being airlifted to hospital.
Two others were being treated for minor and moderate injuries.
State Highway 1 near the intersection with Hunter Road was closed after the crash, and has since reopened.
