A large fire is burning at a waste transfer station in the Auckland suburb of Onehunga.
Fire and Emergency was called to Enviro NZ's Pikes Point Transfer Station about 4.20am on Wednesday.
It describes the blaze as a compound fire on Captain Springs Road.
Shift manager Josh Pennefather said 12 crews responded because the rubbish fire had the potential to spread quickly, but it had been contained thanks to their quick work.
He said the fire was within a space about 30 metres high, 50 metres long and 33 metres wide, but the flames had been contained to the back of the compound.
FENZ station officer Greg Tagiaua said the fire was nearly out but there was still a mound of rubbish that was burning, with a deep-seated fire.
A specialist fire investigator is on the scene, and will be able to access the area once the fire is extinguished.
The section of Captain Springs Road near the transfer station that was earlier closed has now reopened.
St John said it sent one ambulance to the scene.
