Friends of a jetskier missing in the Cook Strait since Monday are still hopeful he will be found.

Dozens of coastguard volunteers from Marlborough and Mana have been helping the police to search for the man, who vanished after setting out from the Tasman District four days ago.

His jetski was found at Cook Rock, off the top of the South Island.

Kāpiti Boating Club commodore John Smith said the club member was an experienced jetskier who took safety precautions, and had crossed the strait many times.

Each day that passed was harder for the man's friends and family - but they were hoping for a miracle, he said.

In an update on Friday afternoon, police said there has been no sign of the missing man and no further items recovered.

They said after an extensive search yesterday in the Cook Strait area - made possible by favourable weather conditions - they were reviewing their search efforts.

"The focus today is on enquiries that will guide further search efforts. There is no physical search underway at present."

Marlborough Coastguard president David St John said 27 volunteers and three vessels scoured the Cook Strait and Marlborough Sounds shoreline on Friday.

"We had a big morning searching as the weather was ideal, it was very calm, good for searching. However, we're saddened that we couldn't locate him."

He said the search area was determined by Police and RCCNZ with the help of local fisherman and divers.
