An armed stand-off in Clutha has come to an end on its second day with a man found dead.
Officers said they had talked to the man on Tuesday, who was believed to be alone, at a rural property.
The stand-off began when police were trying to find a person of interest in relation to alleged firearms offending in the area, police said.
Otago coastal area commander, Inspector Marty Gray, said police including specialist squads had been at the property overnight trying to resolve the situation safely.
"This morning, police made entry to the house around 10.15am and the man was located by officers inside, deceased."
The man's death would be referred to the coroner, Gray said.
"While this is not the outcome police would have hoped for, I want to thank the frontline staff and specialist teams for their hard work in responding diligently to this very lengthy incident."
Gray said the family of the man were being supported.
