Fatal Martinborough four-seater bike crash: Three people remain in stable condition

Three people injured in a horrific crash in Martinborough remain in a stable condition in hospital.

One person died and three others suffered serious injuries when a car and four-seater hire bike collided on Pūruatanga Road on Thursday.

The accident happened in a 100 km/h zone that passed by the entrance of Poppies Winery. General manager Shayne Hammond said members of his staff and locals who came upon the scene had been deeply affected.

"You can't express the sadness. Everyone's hurting and a couple of the guys are definitely struggling. It's just horrifically sad," Hammond said.

Hammond said he spoke to an older man at the scene who he understood to be the driver of the car.

On Saturday morning, police said they were continuing their enquiries into the cause of the crash and were yet to lay any charges.
