Roadworkers who stopped an alleged drunk driver with a baby have been praised for their actions by police.

On Monday afternoon, members of a road working crew spotted a woman driving her car the wrong way through a set of road works on State Highway 29, police said.

They managed to stop the driver from moving on and called police.

Area Road Policing Manger for Western Bay of Plenty, Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter said the 37-year-old driver was allegedly more than three times the legal alcohol limit.

He said the woman was not able to drive the car properly let alone care for the baby who was in the car.

"We thank the team of road workers who alerted us to this behaviour. This vigilant reporting is often the key to police being able to respond in a timely manner and hold people to account for their actions."

Police made referrals to Oranga Tamariki for the care of the child and the driver arrested and charged and would appear in Tauranga District Court at a later date.
