Two people facing child abuse charges appeared in Wellington District Court on Tuesday where there was discussion about how the children, now five and six, were to give evidence.

Early last year health professionals discovered multiple injuries - including broken bones and internal injuries - in two siblings after one was taken to hospital.

The two children were aged four and five and when their injuries were revealed.

A woman - facing two charges of failing to protect a child - appeared by video link while a man facing charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, ill treatment of a dog and cultivation of cannabis appeared in person.

Both were facing additional charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The pair pleaded not guilty at a previous appearance in March last year and elected trial by jury.

Judge Noel Sainsbury set a hearing date for late March to confirm the appointment of a communication assistant and set a date to pre-record the children's testimony.

Both the accused have been granted continued interim name suppression to protect the children's identities.

They were remanded on bail.

A trial date was expected to be set for some time next year.
