Health NZ is under greater government scrutiny, with the new health minister setting up a unit he says will "drive greater accountability and performance".

Simeon Brown says the Health Assurance Unit has been set up within the Public Service Commission to help support his focus on better patient outcomes.

He said the unit was time limited and included experts from across the public sector.

The Minister was responding to questions from RNZ about an article in New Zealand Doctor, saying a taskforce has just been set up to review and potentially replace the health system reset plan put forward by Health NZ commissioner Lester Levy.

The article said the "90-day turnaround plan" will identify new potential cost-savings, structural changes and health priorities.
