A man was struck by a car at a gathering of boy racers on the Kāpiti Coast on Friday night, with some of them obstructing emergency services.
A police spokespseron said officers were called to Old State Highway 1 in Waikanae after reports of a mass gathering of vehicles, shortly before midnight.
The spokesperson said a man was hit by a car doing burnouts, but was unable to be reached.
"Frustratingly, the antisocial road users present obstructed emergency services from accessing the man, and the vehicle believed to be involved fled the scene."
The man was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.
The police spokesperson said the rest of the vehicles dispersed to other locations around the region.
They said police worked to break up those continuing to cause disruption with "unsafe driving activity".
"Police are now working to ascertain exactly what has happened and work to identify those responsible."
