A five-vehicle crash, including one towing a boat, has causing traffic delays on an Auckland motorway.

The accident happened on the northwestern motorway near the St Luke's off-ramp about 6.30am on Monday, police said.

It appeared five vehicles were involved, blocking citybound lanes for more than an hour.

"As this stage there are no reports of injury," police said.

Motorists were warned to expect delays and take alternative routes.

By about 8am police said the crash had been cleared and lanes reopened.

The crash came on the first day of an expected spike in traffic known as 'March madness', as students returned to university. Auckland was also in the midst of rail closures.

Auckland Transport group manager of public transport operations Rachel Cara said the public transport network was ready to help ease the strain.

"We're well prepared for this increase in demand and we've been planning for it," Cara said.

"Auckland has a well connected, frequent public transport system that can handle the increased number of people that need to travel during March."
