The Christchurch Southern Motorway is closed near Curletts Road after a crash involving a concrete mixer.
Police said the crash was reported at about 11.30pm.
The concrete mixer's driver sustained serious injuries, they said.
Traffic is being diverted off the motorway at Curletts Road off-ramp.
Police advise motorists to avoid the area if possible and to expect delays.
