A Wellington rugby club that lost permission to sell alcohol says while the decision is disappointing, it remains committed to operating responsibly.
Last year Johnsonville Rugby Football Club member Jason Tuitama pleaded guilty to manslaughter after a hit and run which killed 28-year-old Casidhe Maguire near Te Papa.
The 24-year-old was sentenced to four years and four months in prison.
Before the fatal crash Tuitama was celebrating at the Johnsonville Rugby Club and had been drinking.
In a statement, the club's chairperson Susan Poutoa said it had changed the way it functioned since Maguire's death.
"In response to this incident, we have made significant improvements to our policies and procedures to enhance the safety and well-being of all members and guests.
"We will no longer be serving alcohol under our club license after 4 June 2025. We remain committed to fostering a positive sporting culture and continuing to provide opportunities for people of all ages to participate in and enjoy the game."
Maguire's father, Paul Maguire has previously objected to the club being able to renew its license.
He said it provided excessive alcohol to Tuitama, did not ask him to leave when he became very drunk, and did not encourage him to take safe transport home.
The club extended its sympathy to Maguire's whānau.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Cass Maguire. This tragic incident has had a profound impact on them, and we offer our sincere sympathies for their loss."
Poutoa thanked the club's members and volunteers for its loyalty during this time.
"As a community sports club, we have always strived to provide a safe and welcoming environment for our members. Our club is proudly run by volunteers and relies on the generous support of our sponsors to continue serving our community.
"We appreciate the ongoing support from our members, volunteers, and sponsors during this challenging time. Our focus remains on strengthening our club and ensuring it remains a valued part of our community for years to come."
