Residents in Wellington were woken by a moderate earthquake on Saturday morning.
GeoNet reports a magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck five kilometres southwest of Wellington at 7.26.
Within minutes almost 10,000 of people reported feeling the rumble, which was 25km deep.
"Quick sharp jolt there," one person on social media site Bluesky commented, using the hashtag #eqnz.
"Strong jolt but short," said another.
