An active front, preceded by a strong northwest flow, is expected to move over the country during Monday and Tuesday, MetService warns.
The front is forecast to bring heavy rain and northwest gales.
MetService has issued an orange heavy rain warning for the Westland District and Fiordland on Monday, with up to 200mm of rain forecast. However, there is only minimal chance of it upgrading to a red-level warning.
Southland and Stewart Island are under a heavy rain watch on Monday. The watch has a high chance of being upgraded to a warning in Southland.
MetService has issued a strong wind watch for Wellington, the Canterbury High Country, the Canterbury Plains - mainly around the foothills, Otago - mainly inland, Fiordland, Southland, and Stewart Island for Monday and Tuesday.
There is a warning that the north to northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
