Govt to pay for Mapua dust clean-up

5:59 am on 28 August 2010

The Government is offering to clean the houses of residents who endured noise and dust during a three-year cleanup of the Mapua toxic site near Nelson.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says up to 40 houses might still have residual dust from the project, which treated contaminated soil from the former Fruitgrowers Chemical Company site.

Residents are being offered up to $600 each to have their homes professionally cleaned.

But a woman who worked opposite the site and says her health has been affected by the cleanup, says the offer is a publicity stunt.

Sherry Prauner says the Government initially refused to help residents with a house clean in June and questions why it now wants to help.

Dr Smith says the previous Government made errors in the cleanup process and he wants to rebuild goodwill in the Mapua community.
