Fire and Emergency says smoke around parts of Christchurch is from a large controlled burn near Bottle Lake Forest Park.
Smoke can be seen across eastern and northern parts of the city.
Fire crews are at the scene, and said the burn-off was safe.
Fire and Emergency said people should locate the source of smoke or fire before calling 111 so crews were not responding unnecessarily.
