A fatal crash has closed part of a main road in a central Auckland suburb.
The crash happened on Carrington Rd in Point Chevalier on Monday morning.
Police said emergency services were at the scene near the intersection with Te Ara Kopiko after the crash which happened just after 9am when a car collided with a pole.
"Sadly the sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene despite medical assistance being provided," police said.
Carrington Rd was closed between the intersections of Seagar Ave and Great North Rd.
The Serious Crash Unit were examining the scene as part of a police investigation which was now under way.
Auckland Transport said commuters should avoid the area or expect delays as diversions were impacting all traffic including bus services.
St John said it was notified of an incident on the road at 9.15am on Monday.
One ambulance and one rapid response vehicle attended.
