A large mudslide is blocking State Highway 3 in Taranaki.
The slip happened at Awakino and the highway south of Awakau Road will be closed overnight, NZ Transport Agency (NZTA)said.
Contractors at Awakino and Piopio are turning back traffic and motorists are being asked to avoid the area.
NZTA said the alternative route is State Highway 1, but it is longer.
The road will be assessed at first light tomorrow.
