The International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch has been bought by Christchurch International Airport Ltd.
Airport chief executive Jim Boult says the airport is the tourism gateway to the South Island and the Antarctic Centre is a key attraction, so it makes sense to bring the two closer together.
He won't say how much money changed hands, but that it is a substantial sum.
Mr Boult says the purchase is part of the company's plan to increase its non-aeronautical profits and a major development for the centre is planned.
He says one of the first changes will be an increase in advertising for the attraction at the airport's information sites.
Antarctic Centre staff have been offered continuing employment.
The airport will take ownership of the Antarctic Centre on 1 December.
