The women's pursuit cycling team will go up against United States riders in the gold medal race after trouncing Italy at the Paris Olympics.

The New Zealanders won their semifinal by 2.673 seconds ahead of the medal race on Thursday morning.

Ally Wollaston, Bryony Botha, Emily Shearman and Nicole Shields were just 0.4s off the world record in the qualifiers on Tuesday and are seen as gold medal favourites.

The pole-vaulting trio of Eliza McCartney, Olivia McTaggart and Imogen Ayris will also chase Olympic glory on Thursday morning, with all three in the Paris Olympic Games final.

Meanwhile, Hamish Kerr is through to the men's high jump final, after being one of only five athletes to clear a height of 2.27 metres. He made the jump on his first attempt.

World-class athletes Aimee Fisher and Dame Lisa Carrington won their kayak sprints heats and will head into the semifinals.
