For the first time in almost a decade the Samoana Sharks have won the high school football championship in American Samoa.
The 7-6 victory was over the Tafuna Warriors was built on strong defence and a stand-out performance from Elliot Lelei, who caught an interception, scored the lone Shark touchdown and kicked the extra point in a low scoring affair affair.
The Warriors tried to rally in the final seconds of the match but a touchdown saving tackle from Lelei stalled Frank Mulipola at the 3 yard line to clinch the title.
The last time Samoana won the championship was in 2009, by the same 7-6 scoreline against the same opponent.
Eliot Lelei was Most Valuable Player, with Moses Michael Samia, who led in rushing yards, crowned Best Offensive Player and Kidman Sea claiming defensive honours.
Samoana's Junior Varsity team also finished the 2017 season as champions.
