Green Party MP Mojo Mathers has launched a petition urging the Government to make building access for people with disabilities a best practice goal, not a minimum compliance one.
The Government has announced it is reviewing building access for disabled people, but Ms Mathers says there needs to be change now - especially given the opportunity with the Christchurch rebuild.
She says the building code and standards that go with it are outdated.
Ms Mathers says Christchurch could be made the most accessible city in the world - but the opportunity will be lost if legislation is not changed soon.
