Labour MP Kelvin Davis is flying to Australia today to see first-hand the situation of New Zealanders detained there.
Australia has begun deporting anyone who has served more than a year in prison there, including New Zealanders who may have lived in Australia for most of their lives.
Pending deportation or appeal, they are held in immigration detention centres.
The latest monthly immigration statistics released by the Australian Border Force show 195 New Zealanders are being held in seven Australian centres.
Mr Davis plans to visit the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney and meet groups advocating on behalf of New Zealand detainees.
