Government minister Paula Bennett has relinquished one of her portfolios so she can focus attention on social welfare and employment.
Ms Bennett says the employment portfolio has big challenges and has asked Prime Minister John Key if she could transfer the disabilities portfolio to someone else.
The minister says it is a decision she has not taken lightly.
The Maori Party has a support arrangement with National, and co-leader Tariana Turia will take up the role of Minister for Disability Issues.
