The Government has rejected a recommendation to raise the age of criminal responsibility, made by a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The idea is among more than 60 suggested as part of a periodic review of New Zealand's human rights efforts.
During the review, individual UN member states were able to ask questions of and make recommendations to the New Zealand contingent.
The aim of raising the age of criminal responsibility from 14 would be that it complies with relevant international standards.
The Government says New Zealand laws and court procedures make extensive special provision for children and young people, and it does not accept the need for a change.
Amendments to lower the age of criminal responsibility for serious crimes to 12 are before a Parliamentary select committee.
