The youth wings of National, Labour, the Greens and ACT have joined forces to oppose any move to return the drinking age to 20.
The Law Commission has recommended raising the legal age for the purchasing alcohol from 18 to 20, as part of a raft of measures to tackle the harm caused by alcohol abuse.
The Young Nationals, Young Labour, ACT on Campus and Young Greens held a joint news conference on Thursday afternoon to argue against the move.
ACT on Campus president Peter McCaffery says it is not the Government's job to decide when and where people may consume alcohol.
Zachary Dorner from the Young Greens says New Zealand's drinking culture is a problem, not 18 and 19 year olds.
He says raising the drinking age would be discriminatory, and would lead to the law being flouted.
