Van de Molen is in hospital, and said in a statement he broke both arms and fractured his spine and ribs in the accident on Saturday.

"Since arriving at Waikato Hospital, I have undergone several surgeries to address my injuries; the medical team expect I will be released from hospital next week," he said.

"My dedicated team remains available in the Waikato electorate and in Wellington for constituent needs ... for now, I will be at home with my family focusing on my recovery."

He thanked the St John's staff and staff at Waikato hospital for their quick response, professionalism and dedication, particularly when their workload was amplified by Covid-19.

National Leader Christopher Luxon said he had told Van de Molen to take time to focus on himself, his recovery and his family.

Gerry Brownlee will take over his roles as Defence and Veterans spokesperson, and Barbara Kuriger will take the Horticulture and Associate Agriculture portfolios while he is recovering.

"We wish Tim well in his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back at work when he is ready," Luxon said.
