Hamilton West byelection winner Tama Potaka spent the most, returns show

Spending by candidates in last year's Hamilton West by-election was just under $200,000.

The Electoral Commission has released the 12 candidates' returns.

National's Tama Potaka, who won the seat, spent the most - $54,000.

He was followed by Labour's Georgie Dansey, on just over $46,000.

Former Labour MP Gaurav Sharma, who stood for the New Zealand Momentum Party and came fourth, spent just under $45,000 on his campaign.

All candidates used the money on advertising.

The spending limit for parliamentary candidates is just over $61,000.
