Watch: Tūrangawaewae welcomes politicians for Koroneihana

2:03 pm today

The prime minister, opposition leader and other political leaders are set to speak from the paepae in Tūrangawaewae at Koroneihana.

A celebration of the Māori King's coronation at Tūrangawaewae marae in Ngāruawāhia, the Koroneihana began on Friday - also marking 18 years since the death of the Māori Queen Dame Te Atairangikāhu.

The celebrations will continue through the week, but Monday is the most political - with politicians expected to speak at a pōwhiri. The Kiingitanga will speak first, followed by government and opposition politicians.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins have reserved speaking slots.

Māori-Crown Relations Minister Tama Potaka (National) and Labour's Spokesperson Peeni Henare are also expected to kōrero. Both are fluent reo Māori speakers.

NZ First's leader Winston Peters and senior MP Shane Jones will also speak. Te Pāti Māori will also attend, with MP Tākuta Ferris speaking on their behalf.

ACT leader David Seymour will not be attending, with some dispute about whether or not the party was invited.
