Pig farmers got a big pat on the back from the SPCA at their annual conference in Wellington on Tuesday.
Juliet Banks is the manager of the SPCA's Blue Tick certification programme.
The Blue Tick is a logo which guarantees consumers the product they're buying was produced in a cruelty-free manner. So far a small number of New Zealand egg, chicken, turkey and pork products have received the tick.
Ms Banks says the pork industry has come a long way in a very short time when it comes to animal welfare and the SPCA now asks the public just to buy New Zealand-farmed pork.
She says in the very near future the first salmon product will receive the blue tick.
