Auckland driver Shane Van Gisbergen's topped the timesheets and will start on pole in his Holden in today's season-ending second V8 Supercars race at the Sydney 500.

It's a Holden 1-2-3 with Jason Bright and title favourite Jamie Whincup rounding out the top three at Olympic Park.

Whincup's closing in on a record-tying fifth Supercars title, holding a 110-point lead over his team-mate and last remaining championship rival Craig Lowndes, after cruising to victory in the first race.

If Lowndes manages to win on Sunday, Whincup only needs to finish 22nd or better to join the late Ian Geoghegan, Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife as the only other five-time champions in Australian touring car history.

Another New Zealand Holden driver, Scott McLaughlin, starts sixth on the grid.
