Diego Forlan scored an early goal to give Atletico Madrid a 1-0 home win over Liverpool in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.
Liverpool had to make the trip overland because of the disruption to air travel as did Fulham who salvaged a nil-all draw at German club hamburg.
Hamburg did almost all of the attacking but were denied by Fulham's Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer who was in inspired form.
The return legs are next week.
