The Spanish rider David Arroyo has grabbed the overall lead in cycling's Tour of Italy after late inclusion Vincenzo Nibali scored a classy win on the 14th stage.
The Italian Nibali, who was only called up after Franco Pellizotti was withdrawn from Liquigas's team because of a doping probe, displayed skill and courage to pull away on a long downhill section towards the end of the 205-kilometre trek and show he's a serious Giro d'Italia contender.
He then confidently maintained a comfortable advantage over team captain Ivan Basso, Michele Scarponi and Australia's world champion Cadel Evans in the last part of the stage from Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna to the Veneto town of Asolo.
It lifts Nibali to eighth overall, six minutes and 51 seconds behind new pink-jersey wearer Arroyo of the Caisse D'Epargne team, who moved 39 seconds clear of former leader Richie Porte.
New Zealand cyclist Greg Henderson just missed out on a stage win on the previous day, pipped for first in a sprint finish by local rider Manuel Belletti.
Both recorded exactly the same time.
The three-week race finishes in Verona on May 30.
