England and Argentina begin recoveries

Embattled England and Argentina have begun their post-World Cup recoveries with morale-boosting wins in football friendlies.

But France slumped to a 2-1 loss to Norway in Oslo with a team purged of players who rebelled against their coach in South Africa.

And the World Cup winners Spain needed a stoppage time equaliser to salvage a 1-all draw in Mexico.

England beat Hungary 2-1 at Wembley where the captain Steven Gerrard scored twice his side's first match since the 4-1 second round loss to Germany.

Argentina, beaten by Germany in the quarter-finals , shrugged off the controversial sacking of coach Diego Maradona to beat Ireland 1-0 in Dublin.

Elsewhere, Australia lost 2-0 in Slovenia, the World Cup runners-up Holland drew 1-all in Ukraine, using a second string team, as did Germany in a 2-all draw in Denmark.
