Hammers and Villa share points

West Ham were unable to give Manuel Pellegrini three points on his 66th birthday and jump to third in the Premier League ladder when they were held to a goalless at Aston Villa.

But the Hammers boss will be pleased by how his side rallied after having Arthur Masuaku sent off midway through the second half.

The best chance of the game came in first-half injury time when visiting 'keeper Lukasz Fabianski displayed fine agility to make a one-handed save to deny John McGinn.

With Masuaku's red card, Villa pressed home their numerical advantage but couldn't break through.

The Hammers move up to eighth place with the point, while promoted Villa are now one spot above the relegation zone on four points from their opening five games.

RA hoping to grow number of gay players

Rugby Australia says it hopes to grow the number of gay rugby players in Australia and educate people about homophobia through a new alliance with a number of gay-inclusive clubs.

Under the alliance, a new committee will be formed by RA with four Australian rugby clubs - Sydney Convicts, Melbourne Chargers, Brisbane Hustlers and Perth Rams - as well as UK-based International Gay Rugby.

"We want rugby to be a game that all Australians can enjoy regardless of their age, race, background, religion, gender or sexual orientation," said RA chief executive, Raelene Castle.

The move to strengthen ties with the gay community comes in a year when the code's relationship with the group came under the spotlight.

Back in May rugby's star player in Australia, Israel Folau, had his contract terminated after he posted a picture to social media in April saying that homosexuals and other "sinners" would go to hell.

NRL officials dropped

Top referee Ashley Klein has paid the price for his blunders in Melbourne's loss to Canberra, with the State of Origin official axed for the second week of the NRL finals.

The NRL confirmed that Klein would only act as a stand-by official for the semi-final round, as they admitted Melbourne had three incorrect calls go against them in the 12-10 loss.

On a busy day in refereeing ranks, the NRL's head of football Graham Annesley also urged social media trolls to lay off touch judge Michael Wise.

Wise was also dropped with Annesley following an error late in the match, and has since come under heavy fire on social media.

Wise was dropped for incorrectly ruling Storm winger Suliasi Vunivalu had touched the sideline as he caught a short kick off in the game's penultimate minute.
