Schachmann defends Paris-Nice title

Maximilian Schachmann retained his Paris-Nice title after overnight race leader Primoz Roglic suffered an ordeal in the final stage, a 92km ride from Le-plan-du-Var to Levens.

Roglic, who had a 52-second lead going into the last stage, crashed on a descent before being forced to change bike and, without a team mate to pace him back into the bunch, he lost considerable ground to end up outside the final top 10.

The Slovenian's woes brought back memories of last year's Tour de France, when he cracked in the final time trial to end up second behind compatriot Tadej Pogacar.

Roglic won three stages in this year's Paris-Nice but it did not matter in the end as German Schachmann of the Bora-Hansgrohe team finished on top, ahead of Russian Aleksandr Vlasov and Spain's Ion Izaguirre, who both ride for Astana.

The final stage was won by Dane Magnus Cort Nielsen ahead of France's Christophe Laporte at the end of a short sprint.

Muguruza relieved to end trophy drought with Dubai win

Former world number one Garbine Muguruza was relieved to finally avoid tripping at the last hurdle and end her trophy drought on Saturday in Dubai, the Spaniard's first WTA singles title in almost two years.

The 27-year-old Muguruza had last won a tournament at Monterrey, Mexico, in April, 2019. Since then she reached the title rounds at the 2020 Australian Open, Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne in February and last week's event in Doha.

"It means a lot, it's never easy to win titles," Muguruza told reporters after her 7-6(6) 6-3 win over Czech Barbora Krejcikova.

"It doesn't happen often, and I'm excited that it happened now, after a few finals that didn't go my way. A nice relief to be able to hold a champion's trophy and not the finalist's trophy."

The strongly built Spaniard won her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in 2016 and bagged her second at Wimbledon the following year to climb to the top of the women's rankings.

She is ranked 16th but leads the WTA tour with 18 victories during the 2021 season.

Rashid's 11 wickets help Afghanistan level series against Zimbabwe

Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan picked up his second 10-wicket haul in test cricket to help his side beat Zimbabwe by six wickets for a series-levelling win in the second test in Abu Dhabi.

Afghanistan, who played their first test against India in 2018, chased down a target of 108 against the African nation in the final session of the match to square the two-match series at 1-1.

The 22-year-old Rashid, who had taken 11 wickets against Bangladesh in 2019, picked up 7-137 in the second innings against Zimbabwe for a match haul of 11-325.

Playing their sixth test match, the Afghans posted 545-4, their highest ever total, before captain Asghar Afghan declared their first innings.

That was built on the first double hundred by an Afghanistan player when Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 200 not out. The skipper made 164.

Freeman says he is not a 'doping doctor' after tribunal verdict

Former British Cycling and Team Sky chief doctor Richard Freeman said he is not "a doping doctor" after a medical tribunal found him guilty of ordering banned testosterone in 2011.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service on Friday ruled Freeman ordered Testogel "knowing or believing" it to be for an athlete to improve their performance.

Freeman, 61, was charged with ordering 30 sachets of Testogel to the national velodrome in Manchester in 2011 for an unnamed athlete.

"I'm still shocked at this verdict. I've made plenty of mistakes but I'm not a doping doctor," Freeman told the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

"It's so disappointing. It's unbelievable. I have never doped a rider in my life.

"I accept there are people who don't believe me... But I can say with a clear conscience that I didn't order Testogel knowing or believing it was for cheating.

"We (Team Sky and British Cycling) were more interested in spending money on ceramic bearings instead of a medical records system."

Initially, Freeman said the Testogel had been ordered in error and returned, without providing evidence.

Giving evidence in November, 2019, he said he had been bullied into ordering it by former head coach Shane Sutton who wanted it to treat erectile dysfunction, a claim Sutton had denied and which the tribunal found to be an "elaborate falsehood" as Freeman sought to cover his tracks.

The hearing on Freeman's case will continue on March 17 when the tribunal will consider if the doctor's "fitness to practise is impaired".

"I believe in due process," Freeman added. "I believe in evidence. I believe the truth will come out. I'm not a doper."
