Maloney holds a five point lead after the second day of racing, while Junior is 10 points back in third.
Two days were lost because of the weather, but they were back on the water today with Maloney picking up a third and a second, while Junior had a second and a win.
The regatta, which doubles as the World Championship, will be decided tomorrow and the leading New Zealander will be awarded the Olympic berth in the class.
It's an impressive return for the New Zealand pair considering they had done very little sailing in the heavyweight dinghy over the last 18 months because of their America's Cup and SailGP commitments.
"It was a pretty awesome day's racing," said Junior, who won the last race. "Andy made an early mistake in the first race and I made a late one and we both ended up pretty bad. It was good to bounce back and get a few good ones at the end and it was good fun to battle Andy in the final race of the day."
Aitken back for Warriors
Offseason signing Euan Aitken is in line to make just his second appearance for the Warriors when they face the in-form Parramatta Eels in Sunday's NRL game in Brisbane.

And in a double boost Aitken's fellow new signing Ben Murdoch-Masila comes back into the second row after missing Sunday's 32-38 loss to Manly.
The Warriors began their 2021 campaign with the 25-year-old Aitken and vastly experienced Peta Hiku as their first-choice centres combination but have been able to use them only once together and for a total of just five appearances between them in the first nine rounds.
Aitken needed ankle surgery after the 19-6 win over the Titans, forcing him to miss the last eight matches, while Hiku is now out for the season following a shoulder operation. On top of that other centre options Adam Pompey, Marcelo Montoya and Paul Turner have also had injury issues, the since-departed Turner another gone for the season with a shoulder injury.
Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown has again listed Aitken on the interchange bench.
All this weekend's NRL fixtures are being played in Brisbane.
Fury-Joshua bout confirmed
A long-awaited world heavyweight boxing title unification fight between British rivals Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua is set for Saudi Arabia in August.

Joshua, 31, holds the IBF, WBO, WBA and IBO titles while Fury, 32, is the WBC belt holder.
"August the seventh, August the 14th. I think it's a very bad secret that the fight is happening in Saudi Arabia," Eddie Hearn, head of Matchroom Sport and Joshua's promoter said.
Joshua won back his belts from Andy Ruiz Jr in Diriyah, on the outskirts of the Saudi capital Riyadh, in December 2019. He had lost the belts to the Mexican-American in an earlier shock defeat.
Hearn said Fury's lawyers were going through the fine details but an announcement could come this week.
Hearn said in March that Fury and Joshua had agreed a two-fight deal to unify the title, although Fury's co-promoters subsequently cast doubt on that.
Fury has not fought for more than a year since his knockout win against American Deontay Wilder. Joshua's last fight was against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev in December.

ECB financially hit by Covid
The England & Wales Cricket Board has reported a loss of $31 million for the past year after its finances took a hit from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Turnover fell by $41 million pounds to $403 million as a result of the postponement of The Hundred, a new franchise-based league in which the ECB has invested heavily, as well as the cost of staging bio-secure tournaments.
Across the sport, including the ECB and first-class counties, revenue losses were over $194 million, although a worst-case scenario was avoided by successfully hosting a full programme of international cricket last year.
England's men's side welcomed West Indies, Ireland, Pakistan and Australia between July and September last year, while the women's team hosted West Indies in September.
England's men's team face New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India starting this June, while the women's side host India and New Zealand.

Buffon to leave Juve
Veteran Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon says he will leave the Serie A club at the end of the season.

Buffon, 43, has won 10 Serie A titles and four Italian Cups over two spells with Juve. He returned to Turin in 2019 after a season at Paris St-Germain.
Buffon, who won the 2006 World Cup with Italy, added: "Either I stop playing, or if I find a situation that motivates me to play or have a different life experience, I will take it into consideration.
The former Italy player, who won 176 international caps, holds the record for most Serie A appearances with 656 games in Italy's top flight.
