Mitchell has entered an early guilty plea to a grade two reckless high tackle charge and has been suspended for six matches.

He was sin-binned for his high shot in the Rabbitohs' match against the Roosters on Friday night that left former teammate Joey Manu with a fractured cheekbone.

Manu underwent facial reconstruction surgery in Brisbane on Saturday.

The Kiwis centre has posted on Instagram on Sunday to thank "everyone for all the support & kind messages. I'm in good spirits and recovering well."

Odd Christian Eiking retained the overall lead but reigning champion and race favourite Primoz Roglic, in third, shaved 20 seconds off his advantage while Guillaume Martin stayed second, gaining four seconds.

Bardet attacked with 6km to go on the final ascent to rein in Andrey Zeits and Nicolas Prodhomme and remained in front until the end of the punishing summit of Pico Villuercas, coming across the line 44 seconds before second-placed Jesus Herrada.

"It's been a long wait. It means a lot. I've been second too many times," Bardet told reporters.

Australian Jay Vine came third despite hitting the floor as he lost his balance while taking a water bottle from a team car.

Norwegian Eiking holds a 54-second lead over Frenchman Martin and a one minute, 36 second advantage over Slovenian Roglic.

DeChambeau parlayed the two eagles while shooting 6-under 30 on the front nine before finishing at 5-under 67.

The Dutchman lapped the seven-km track in one minute 59.765 seconds.

Russell briefly looked like he would seize a shock pole in his Williams, with even Mercedes's championship leader Lewis Hamilton unable to beat him, but was ultimately pipped by Verstappen with a lap that was 0.321 seconds quicker.

Hoping to join Hamilton at the champion team next season, Russell inadvertently ends up being a buffer between the seven-time champion, who will start third, and his Red Bull title rival.

"That was so difficult out there," whooped Verstappen, who heads into Sunday's race eight points behind Hamilton in the overall standings after having had a 33-point lead overturned in just two races. "We needed that."

Saints earn point with late penalty in 2-2 draw at Newcastle

Southampton's James Ward-Prowse scored a 96th-minute penalty to earn his side a dramatic 2-2 draw at Newcastle United - a result that leaves both teams still waiting for their first win of the season.

Saints were awarded the spot kick in the dying minutes after a VAR intervention, with Jamaal Lascelles adjudged to have fouled Adam Armstrong as he was about to shoot.

The result earned 15th-placed Newcastle their first point of the season, while Southampton are two spots higher on two points after a defeat and two draws.

Gray strikes as clinical Everton sink Brighton

New signing Demarai Gray scored his second goal in as many Premier League games for Everton and Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted a penalty as the Toffees continued their good start with a 2-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Gray, who joined the Merseyside club from German side Bayer Leverkusen in July, gave the visitors a 41st-minute lead when he beat goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with a crisp low shot into the far corner after a darting run.

Everton dominated and Sanchez kept out a low Andros Townsend drive midway through the first half while his opposite number Jordan Pickford parried a Pascal Gross free kick after Gray had silenced the home fans.

Halftime substitute Joel Veltman gave away a clumsy penalty when he clattered into Seamus Coleman and Calvert-Lewin drilled in the spot kick in the 58th minute but not before a tussle with team mate Richarlison.

The Brazilian forward grabbed the ball and refused to let first-choice penalty taker Calvert-Lewin proceed before he was restrained and ushered away by several Everton players.

Sanchez spared Brighton, who had won both their opening two matches, a bigger defeat when he denied Abdoulaye Doucoure in the closing stages but Everton were well worth their win which put them on seven points from three games.

Pacesetters West Ham held to 2-2 home draw by Palace

Crystal Palace midfielder Conor Gallagher scored his side's first two league goals of the season as they held West Ham United to a 2-2 draw in an entertaining derby at the London Stadium.

The point took the Hammers back to top spot in the Premier League table, though David Moyes's side will feel that they could have taken all three points against a Palace side that struggled to deal with their high press.

After two goalless outings for Palace so far this season, Gallagher finally got his side's first league goal under new boss Patrick Viera 13 minutes into the second half, scooping the ball home from a tight angle.

Palace's second point in three games lifts them to 14th spot and Viera was delighted with the character his team showed.

They may have moved back to the top of the table on seven points, but West Ham were not happy with how they performed.

The draw leaves Villa in 11th place on four points from three games, with Brentford two spots higher on five.

Leicester beat Norwich

Leicester City's Marc Albrighton struck a 76th minute winner as the visitors condemned promoted Norwich City to a third straight defeat with a 2-1 win at Carrow Road.

Jamie Vardy had fired Leicester ahead with a superbly taken goal in the eighth minute before Teemu Pukki brought the home side level from the penalty spot just before the break.

The penalty came after Caglar Soyuncu was ruled, after a lengthy VAR review, to have fouled Pierre Lees-Melou and Pukki kept his cool after the delay to slot home.

The victory moved Leicester up to eighth place on six points, while Norwich are second-bottom above Arsenal.
