Tied 0-0 following extra time in their inter-continental playoff match, it was Socceroo's substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne who became the hero on the night.

Redmayne danced across the goal-line as Alex Valera ran in to take his penalty, before diving to his right and saving the shot, handing Australia victory at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar.

The 33-year-old Sydney FC goalkeeper replaced starter Matt Ryan at the conclusion of extra time, and wrote his name into Australian football history with a heroic save.

The qualification sees Australia appear in its sixth World Cup, with a round of 16 appearance in 2006 their only time advancing from Group stage.

They will join defending champions France, Denmark in Tunisia in Group D in Qatar.

The World Cup finals take place from November 21 until December 18.
