New Zealand allrounder Melie Kerr has played a starring role in the first game of the inaugural Twenty20 Women's Premier League in India, steering her Mumbai Indians to a massive 143-run win.
Kerr scored an unbeaten 45 off just 24 balls as Mumbai posted 207-5 against the Gujarat Titans, before her two overs of leg spin delivered figures of 2-12 as the opposition were skittled for a meagre 64.
Kerr's 89-run partnership with Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur (65 off 30) while she then played a part in Gujurat's dramatic collapse to be 23-7 at one stage of their response, with Saika Ishaque the pick of Mumbai's bowlers, claiming 4-11.
The only other New Zealander involved in the five-team, three-week WPL is White Ferns captain Sophie Devine, who was to open her campaign on Sunday night for Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Delhi Capitals Women.
