Black Caps coach Gary Stead says it's too early to rule New Zealand's most prolific run scorer Kane Williamson out of October's World Cup in India.

Williamson arrived back home this morning after suffering a serious knee injury while fielding for the Gujarat Titans in their season opening IPL match.

Williamson leapt for a catch on the boundary but landed akwardly with his knee giving out from under him.

He was left clutching his knee and needed on-field treatment for several minutes before being helped off.

Williamson was thought to have torn ligaments in his right knee but Stead said he would have further scans to confirm a diagnosis.

"He's been taken straight to sports doctors and to specialists in Auckland and from there we will get a little bit more understanding of the extent of the injury."

Until they have a prognosis on his injury, Stead isn't contemplating what it means for the Black Caps and the World Cup.

"It's too early to know about Kane and where it's at. The World Cup is six or seven months away and until we get that (medical) update we won't consider any of the options until we know for sure."

Meanwhile Central Districts have won the Plunket Shield with a 188 run win over Auckland, to pip Canterbury for the trophy.

The Stags left arm fast bowler Ray Toole took career best figures of 7-57 to help bowl Auckland out for just 103 in their second innings to give the Stags the trophy.

The Stags needed to win the match outright to claim the Plunket Shield and surpass Canterbury on the ladder.

The match had been postponed from earlier in the season due to Cyclone Garbrielle and comes just days after the Stags won the 50 over Ford Trophy final.
