Sri Lanka have scored their first win over New Zealand in any format of women's cricket.

Sri Lanka beat the White Ferns by nine wickets in their rain-shortened first ODI in Galle.

An unbeaten century from captain Chamari Athapaththu guided the home-side to their target of 171 in the reduced 28 over aside game.

The start of the match was delayed due to a wet ground and then after winning the toss New Zealand decided to bat first.

Amelia Kerr top scored with 40.

The New Zealand innings wasn't helped by two runouts with captain Sophie Devine dismissed for 19 and Maddy Green 38.

New Zealand finished on 170 for five.

However the target wasn't a problem for Sri Lanka with Athapaththu scoring 108 off 83 balls and Vishmi Gunaratne 50.

The pair put 159 for the opening wicket and helped get their side home with an over to spare.

Devine, who picked up the one wicket, wasn't happy with their first up performance.

"Pretty disappointing, Devine said afterwards.

"But we have to tip our hat to Chamari and the Sri Lankan team as they showed us how to bat on a wicket that was exceptionally good.

"So for us a tough day at the office."

The second match of the series will be played at the same venue on Friday.
