Black Caps veteran Tim Southee is set to play in his fourth World Cup after being cleared to join the team in India.

The pace bowler dislocated and fractured a thumb playing against England earlier this month.

He had surgery on the thumb last week.

The Black Caps say Southee is continuing to progress from the surgery and will fly out this weekend.

A New Zealand Cricket statement says the aim is for the 34-year-old to be available for their opening World Cup game against England in Ahmedabad on 5 October.

As a contingency, pace-bowler Kyle Jamieson will also join the World Cup squad in India this week to train.

Jamieson will not officially be part of the World Cup squad and therefore not available to play in any of the warm-up matches scheduled for Friday against Pakistan and Monday against South Africa.

The Black Caps wrapped up the ODI series in Bangladesh this morning with a seven wicket victory in game three in Dhaka.

Southee and captain Kane Williamson are the two members of the New Zealand team that have been selected for four World Cup tournaments.
