Auckland based Englishman Dan Gardner will head into the final day of the Tour of Southland as race leader, despite down the field on the penultimate stage of the event.
Gardner missed out on the decisive break of the 151km sixth stage from Invercargill to Gore, but he and his team managed to limit their losses as eventual stage winner Australian Kane Richards tried desperately fight his way back into title contention.
Gardner finished 27 seconds behind Richards but maintains a 35 second lead over second placed Arthur Meyer of France with Waikato Borris Clark third and second further back.
Tomorrow's final day includes a 13km individual time trial and the final 70km stage from Winton to Invercargill.
